Lukla Airport is renowned as one of the most dangerous airports in the world due to its high-altitude location, short and sloping runway, and treacherous mountainous terrain. These factors combine with unpredictable weather, thick fog, and a lack of advanced navigation equipment, forcing pilots to rely on visual flight rules and land perfectly on the first try. The lack of a "go-around" option, meaning a failed landing attempt cannot be easily corrected, makes the process extremely high-risk. As the weather was closing in the Island Peak expedition members, the operator decided to heli lift his mountaineering clients back to Kathmandu. I was lucky enough to have the co-pilot's seat on the 50 minute flight and this short shows the lift through the poor weather at Lukla strip.
