Russia’s Ministry of Defense has unveiled a short video showing the launch of the new Kinzhal hypersonic weapon system. The missile, based on a land-based tactical missile, is designed to penetrate American defenses and deliver a tactical nuclear warhead. The video includes some strange moments, including mysterious blurred sections that may or may not be hiding something important.

The short video was uploaded to YouTube and features two pilots rushing to their MiG-31 Foxhound jet fighter, inspecting the attached Kinzhal missile, and taking off. The giant missile is launched and never seen again. Here it is.

The Kinzhal is based on the land-based Iskander-M short range ballistic missile and is is carried by the MiG-31. The aircraft and missile both have been around for years, if not decades. In that sense, Kinzhal is very much in the spirit of the Pentagon’s own "Third Offset strategy," which calls for using existing weapons in new and innovative ways.

One odd aspect of the video: in two clips, the missile’s nose cone is blurred out on the left side, presumably to mask some new high-tech feature. In this video, for example, the Bell V-280 Valor’s tilting mechanism that allows the rotors to pivot 90 degrees is blurred out.
