*** 535 known as “Marie” was the last American steam engine to be streamlined in 1947. Marie was streamlined as well as mechanically upgraded with new cast cylinders & forward frame section as well as roller bearings, she pulled the City of Memphis. In 1949 Marie had a catastrophic failure of the side rods on the engineer’s side, this occurred near Vaughn’s Gap, Tennessee, the engineer reportedly “felt something not right about the machinery” & stepped out of the engineer’s seat position only to have the flailing side rods clean off the right side of the cab from the engine, he's movement to the other side saved his life, sadly Marie was then towed to Nashville & scrapped in 1949.

*** 536 was the first NC&StL steam engine in 1940 to receive semi-streamlining, she pulled the Dixie Flagler passenger train an all coach Chicago to Florida train. On her first day of service as a newly semi-streamlined engine she struck a vehicle at a road crossing which destroyed her streamlined pilot, a standard pilot then replaced the streamlined one, nine years later she was then sadly scrapped in 1949.
