Recounting the legend behind the celebration of Indrayani Jatra in Kirtipur, he said, “It is said that a demon lived in Kirtipur and ate the people of the village. Therefore, for the welfare of the village, one member was sacrificed from each house until the turn of an old couple came. At that time, a prince came to their house in need of shelter. The couple gave him shelter for the night and when he came to know that one of them was going to the demon to be killed, the prince requested the couple to let him go. And the prince, who was actually Goddess Indrayani, killed the demon and freed the village from that demon. Therefore, this festival is celebrated to this day in memory of that victory.” People from different castes of Newar communities - including Shrestha, Maharjan, Kapali, Mali and Khadgi - gather during this festival and the Jatra is celebrated with great pomp.
