Hobby King Slow Stick with Turnigy Aerostar SRS Flight Control System stabilizer.

Perhaps never before I had an opportunity to pilot such a slow and steady RC model aircraft, such as the HK Slow Stick. It is a clone of a quite famous model GWS Slow Stick. It has several adaptations (perhaps most important is thicker wing and controled ailerons).

I do not know how flown GWS Slow Stick. But this from Hobby King is fantastic. It flies really walk speed (well, after all, not a step but a trot :)), quiet, stable and still has a sufficiently powerful engine, so start virtually from the site. She turns in 10m. Even against a slight wind can virtually "stand still" relative to the ground.

It is equipped with 4 pcs 9 g servos (2xailerons, elevator, rudder). It is fully controllable by all three axes and is really able to fly all the usual maneuvers (rolls, stall, inverted flight, ...).

The ailerons are due to mechanical arrangement mildly reverse differentiation (downward deflections are little more than upward) but that does not not affect negative the flight control, can comfortably fly even as combat (only on aileron and elevator), rudder control is not essential.

Plane we want to use to teach new pilots, so we tried this good and stable plane even improve by flight stabilizer deployment.

Due to the open structure of the model the location of the stabilizer near the center of gravity is relatively easy.

I decided to use Turnigy SRS Aerostar Flight Control System from Hobby King (it's about 1/3 cheaper clone of NX3 Evo).

It has several functions essential for us:

Beginner mode (reduces the max. Inclination of the plane and after releasing Stick assignment back wing to the horizontal plane)

Safe Mode (by closing switch on the transmitter stabilizer automatically align the plane into a rising moderately stable flight)

Ability to disable stabilization in flight

After mounting the stabilizer and its adjustment was necessary in 2 channels to change the polarity of stabilization (this is done by turning the trim gain the appropriate channel on the opposite side from the zero position). I kept setting (except polarity) channel for elevator and ailerons as recommended in the manual (and factory setting). When testing at home seemed response to the rudder a bit weak, so I set the rudder trim angle increased approximately 2-time.

On the radio (Turnigy T9X firmware OpenTx) I set the control modes of stabilization to the 3-position switch. The emergency mode toggle control uses ordinay 2-position switch.

Then we went to check out. But just blow pretty strong wind (anemometer by about 6 m / s). Due to a previous good experience with the airplane I was on a dare. I started with stabilization switched off. When I start, I had quite a problem in the gusty wind . I climbed a little bit and turned on beginner mode. Model instantly calmed down and only manifestation of wind that among the intensified at 8 m / s (with gusts up to 10 m / s), it was a strong wind drift - model flew downwind like lightning, against the wind it flows with the difficulties. Even with the minimal throttle model it pretty "sail" against the wind (rather thus sometimes backed downwind).

Landing was totally relaxed, sat down model with zero forward speed (under a little bit of gas to).

So far I am fully satisfied with the model and its equipment and for that purpose it will be almost perfect. By far the easiest model that I have ever flew.
