India’s steel imports have dropped sharply by 15% year-on-year in H1FY’26, totaling 4.9 million tonnes, as tighter trade norms, safeguard duties, and quality controls take effect.

The safeguard duty on flat steel has widened the price gap between imported and domestic material, making Indian HRCs cheaper by up to ₹8,000 per tonne. As a result, flat steel imports plunged 31%, led by a steep 40% fall in HRC arrivals.
