On February 23, 1986, 26-year-old Maurine Forschen Hunsaker was reported missing from her gas station job in Kearns, Utah, after her husband received a call that she had been kidnapped by someone who wanted to rob her.

Two days later, in Big Cottonwood Canyon, a hiker discovered Hunsaker's body.

A day before Hunsaker was found, police arrested Ralph Menzies for unrelated burglary charges and found Hunsaker's identification cards in his possession. He was charged with her death.

On March 8, 1988, after a month-long trial, Menzies was found guilty of Hunsaker's murder. Two weeks later, Menzies was sentenced to death by the judge.
