During the French Revolution, particularly between 1793 and 1794, France witnessed one of the most radical attempts in history to erase Christianity from public life. The National Assembly passed decrees abolishing Christianity, setting the Bible aside, and transforming churches into “Temples of Reason.” Possession of Scripture became dangerous, and faith was openly mocked.

In place of Christianity, revolutionary leaders promoted state-sponsored atheistic and deistic religions, most notably the worship of the Goddess of Reason. This period, known as the Reign of Terror, sought to replace God entirely with human reason — and the results were devastating.
