Crossing the river Dvina, also called Daugava was crucial for the advance on Leningrad.
Two cities were keys to this advance, Daugavils, also known as Dünaburg or Dvisnk, and Jekabpils, also known as Jakobstadt.
Riga was an important city and port, for sure, but direct advance to Leningrad, due to logistics and inrastrucure, had Daugavpils as the most important objective.
At this point, the mysterious unit known as the Brandenburgers, or de Brandenburg commandos, especially devised for capturing objectives such as these, the bridges over the River Dvina or Daugava in the two cities, Daugavpils and Jekabpils.
In this episode we finally conclude the first week of combat in the North, on the Eastern Front.
The spectacular German advance follows its course, and in this series we aknowledge heroism of individual soldiers and people on both sides, as the true protagonists of this war regardless of their governments.
