MAKING A TEAM
The key to putting together great rosters is accurately evaluating players. Over the last 25 years, Select has developed the proven blueprint for success based on experience and endless discussions with top coaches. We have found that our process works at any level from recruiting in the Pac-12 to finding the best roster for a high school JV team.

EVALUATIONS
To make a Select team, players need to be evaluated. As coaches, we are constantly evaluating players and building out their profiles. We want to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and potential. These evaluations come in a lot of different locations and by a lot of different people. Below are the four most used evaluations.

High School Season (October – March, June)
Our coaching staff is located around the northwest. As full-time coaches, they are already watching a lot of games so they have a good feel for the players they see in the winter. Our staff also travels on their own to watch specific tournaments to find players.

AAU season (April-May, July)
Some players, especially those that are already in the Select program, have been evaluated at length by our coaching staff.
Trusted recommendations (Year Round)

Coach's recommendation
Occasionally we will get a strong player recommendation from a high-level college coach that we trust. These recommendations carry a lot of weight.

Tryouts (March, May)
This is where players that either have not been recently evaluated or have not been evaluated at all have a chance to showcase what they have. This is where we found players like Rollie Worster (University of Utah) and Sam Lecholat (Montana State University). Tryouts offer players multiple opportunities to compete in different situations and with different players around them.

Tryouts are really the only opportunity that players can be sure that they are being seen. Though players may be playing in high school and AAU, there is no guarantee that one of our coaches will be able to see them. However, players know they will be seen at a tryout.

Besides making a team, there are other benefits of trying out.
Most of our tryouts typically have 5-8 college coaches attending from the surrounding area so players can instantly be put on a college coach’s radar.

Additionally, our coaching staff takes a lot of calls from college coaches every week asking about certain players. But if our staff hasn’t seen a player play, they cannot give the coach an honest evaluation. Even if a player tries out but decides not to play on a Select team, our staff can still give an evaluation to the college coach.

INVITATION TO PLAY
Starting at the end of February and through all of our March tryouts, coaches are discussing the players they have seen and where they might fit on a roster. With approximately 15 teams at various ages every year (120 roster spots), this is a lengthy process with a lot of back and forth amongst our staff.

Our invitations are sent out in batches to players that we think will be competitive in our program. In addition, there are always a few players that we think are highly talented but are right on the bubble of making a team. After we send out invitations, there are always a few players that decide to decline their invitation. At that point we offer their spot to those players that were in contention and deserve a spot.

The process of filling out rosters usually goes until the end of March.

Making a Select team is not easy. But players that do make a team can rest assured that they have been thoroughly evaluated and meet the highest standards of any AAU basketball program in the country.
