As an Aryan ‘God of Gods’ (devati-deva), it is unlikely that the Buddha was originally viewed as an historical figure. Rather, the Buddha appears to be a new and distinctive human avatar of an Aryan Creator God (Purusottama), whom in this case descends from the heavens to forge a path (dharmapada) to spiritual bliss. This is a very old story with a few new twists. Buddhist traditionalists rejected a number of societal norms of their Brahmanic associates, but they never abandoned the beliefs, symbols, mythic themes and goals of their Aryan ancestors. Buddhists worshipped the Vedic pantheon; they embraced the doctrines of karma and reincarnation; they viewed the natural world (samsara) as delusional; and they claim to achieve bliss (brahman-nirvana) by means of the Buddha’s nectar of immortality (amrita). This would suggest, therefore, that the ‘Buddha’ represents a new title and mythic aspect of the Vedic plant-god, Soma Pavamana (the sacred lotus).
