This session examines how the human body detects, responds to, and attempts to contain infectious threats, linking microbial pathogenesis to host immune defenses and real-time clinical decision-making. Students will review the stages of infection—from exposure and attachment through invasion, injury, and transmission—and analyze how bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa exploit host vulnerabilities.

The lecture emphasizes the innate and adaptive immune responses, the inflammatory cascade, and the systemic manifestations of infection, including fever, sepsis, and shock. Using case-based examples, students will apply a structured clinical approach to the febrile patient, integrating history, physical examination, laboratory data (including WBC differentials, cultures, MICs, and sensitivity reports), and early risk stratification tools such as qSOFA.

Special attention is given to vulnerable populations across the lifespan, including pediatric immune immaturity, maternal–infant immunity, and geriatric immunosenescence, as well as vaccine principles and immunization strategies. The session concludes with evidence-based principles of empiric antimicrobial therapy, source control, and indications for infectious disease consultation, reinforcing how pathophysiology directly informs diagnostic reasoning and treatment decisions in advanced nursing practice.
