Hurricane Hilary impacted the San Diego area as a Tropical Storm in August 2023 and brought record-breaking rainfall and destructive winds to the region, resulting in catastrophic flooding in the mountains and deserts as mentioned in this statement; her wrath was felt across the entirety of Southern California, especially in areas such as the Coachella Valley and the Anza Borrego desert, and also prompted nearly 90% of public schools in San Diego County to be closed until Tuesday the following week. $900 million in damage was reported
