The Battle of the Coral sea was the first carrier vs. carrier naval battle in history where neither fleet were ever within visual range. The IJN was near the peak of its power at this point, and its carrier force was supported by elite pilots such as Iwamoto Tetsuzo.

Although this battle was a tactical victory for the Japanese, the USN successfully stopped the invasion. Thus it was an Allied strategic victory.
