The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Deputy Secretary, Jim O’Neill, denounced alleged massive fraud in Minnesota’s childcare programs, which may have allowed scammers and fake daycare centers to siphon off millions of dollars in federal funds. According to his statements, the program allocates approximately $185 million annually to benefit around 19,000 children, resources that may have been compromised over the past decade.

In response to the seriousness of the allegations, HHS announced three immediate measures: the activation of a nationwide verification system for childcare payments, the demand for a comprehensive audit of childcare centers in Minnesota requested from Governor Tim Walz, and the creation of a hotline and reporting channel for fraud complaints. O’Neill warned that anyone involved in diverting these funds will face prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.
