How to Make a Simple Collar Weld (Forge Welding Techniques)

In this video, I show you how to forge a collar and to complete forge welding collars. If you want to learn more about blacksmith collaring, this video covers the basics.


Calculating Material Needed for Collars (Excerpt from Lorelei Sims' "The Backyard Blacksmith" page 101)

(Thickness of material to be joined x 4) + (Height of material to be joined x 2) + (Thickness of collar material x 2)

Example: Let's say you have two scrolls that you want to join with a collar that is 1/8th inch (0.3cm) thick. The scrolls are made from 1/2 inch (1cm) square stock.
(1/2 x 4) + (1/2 x 2) + (1/8 x 2) =
4/2 + 1 + 2/8=
2 + 1 + 1/4 = 3 1/4"
Your collar length should be 3 1/4 inches (8.3cm)
