Los Campesinos! live @ The Roxy at Mahall's, Lakewood OH (June 21st, 2024) [Complete Show]

Let's begin this story with how this gig almost never happened for me. I had made plans to spend a week in Chicago with several shows lined up (Seth Meyers; Pixies + Modest Mouse + Cat Power, part 2; Protomartyr). Los Campesinos! at Thalia Hall would have been nice, but it was sold out. Drats!. I even looked for tickets in Cleveland but no dice (some foreshadowing here), sacrebleu!.
On a hunch, the night before the Cleveland show I clicked on the "buy tickets" button on Songkick and alas, tickets were magically available through the Dice app. Halle-freaking-lujah!!!

I've been a fan of LC! since the early days. I distinctly recall listening to them and The Ponys on a work trip to Rotterdam in 2007. Remember the days of buying ringtones for your shitty flip phone? my first ringtone was 'Dirty Boots' by Sonic Youth. My second? 'You! Me! Dancing!'. Then I found out that having a favorite song as a ringtone is a terrible idea when you hate most phone calls.

In any case, LC! and I have been close friends forever. They've just never toured anywhere close to me. Then with the pandemic they kind of went a little dormant, releasing a single EP since 2017. But 2024 will usher the release of a new album in July, with a tour of the USA in the summer. Which brings us to June 21st, a moment nearly 18 years in the making for me.

It was amazing to see so many young folks at the show, many enjoying their first LC! show, just like me. The night was truly magical. Short Fictions, who opened the show, were excellent. Then LC! were as charming and energetic as I knew they would be. Just a relentless pace of awesomeness. The crowd was amazing, dancing their asses off and singing their hearts out. This recording goes out to the 17 year old lad with the cool magpie shirt that I had a fantastic conversation with and who was attending his very first LC! show with his very cool mom, whose favorite song by the band is 'By Your Hand'. I know you both had as much fun as I did!

pps. A word about the resolution of the video. I shot the vid at 1080p but had to do a fair bit of panning and zooming to avoid obtrusive body parts from the audience and to bring some additional dynamics to the edited video because I wasn't super close to the band and my line of sight wasn't great, so it's a little grainy in places, but that's a "creative" decision which I hope you won't mind...
