Jimpa (John Lithgow) has spent decades living an independent, joyfully gay life in Amsterdam—far from his daughter Hannah (Olivia Colman) and her non-binary teenager, Frances (Aud Mason-Hyde, the director Sophie Hyde’s own child). When they arrive for a long-overdue visit, Frances unexpectedly announces they want to stay for a year, eager to build a relationship with the grandfather they’ve barely known. Hannah, however, remembers Jimpa all too well: brilliant, charismatic, unreliable, and often painfully self-involved.

As the visit unfolds, old wounds begin to surface. Hannah must navigate her own resentments while giving Frances the freedom to form their own impressions of Jimpa. Meanwhile, Jimpa—now aging and feeling increasingly sidelined in his work—grapples with what it truly means to show up for family after years of distance.

Tender, funny, and beautifully observed, Jimpa explores the messy imperfections of family and the complexities of parenting at every age. Director Sophie Hyde (52 Tuesdays, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande) crafts a deeply human story about forgiveness, the intergenerational nuances of queer experience, and the unexpected joy that can emerge when old resentments are finally set aside. -KM
