Metamorphism of shale occurs when shale, a fine-grained sedimentary rock, is subjected to increased heat and pressure inside the Earth. As metamorphism progresses, shale changes into different metamorphic rocks. At low-grade metamorphism, shale becomes slate. With further heat and pressure, it transforms into phyllite, then schist, and finally gneiss at high-grade metamorphism. During this process, the minerals recrystallize, and the rock develops a foliated (layered) structure. This sequence shows how shale gradually changes into more crystalline and harder metamorphic rocks.
