Even though I was born in Taiwan, because I grew up in the US, there's many things I don't know about my birthplace. Even after completing my Taiwanese Pilgrimage 5 years ago, I did not know Taiwan was part of the Republic of China. The Republic of China has 2 provinces, Taiwan Province (台灣省) and Fuchien Province (福建省), and I have NEVER been to Fuchien Province. Ever since I found out about Fuchien Province, I've been dying to go check it out, and this time we finally have the opportunity to visit one of the islands - KINMEN!! What's the significance of Kinmen?? What is life like in Kinmen?? What's there to do in Kinmen!?? If you want to know, then come join me as we head out to the little island literally a stones throw away from China!




During the Chinese Civil War between the Nationalist and the Communist, the Communist defeated the Nationalist on the mainland and established the People's Republic of China in 1949 while the leadership of the ROC and remaining Nationalists retreated to Taiwan. The Communist wanted to take over Kinmen first, then launch a final assault from Kinmen into Taiwan. Ultimately, the Communist was unable to take over Kinmen (and thus Taiwan), so we're currently living in a timeline where both the PRC and the ROC both exist.

Kinmen was a very important strategic point during the Chinese Civil War, and it was heavily fortified by Nationalist troops. Now that the fighting has stopped, most of the war remnants are for war tourism.
