One of the most common questions I get from brand managers: “How do I make my 1-1s better with my director?” Too often, brand managers aren’t prepared to take the lead in these meetings. You should be leading your 1-1s, not your director.

Drive your agenda using this framework:

Major FYIs and Recently Completed—Inform your manager of the biggest items/accomplishments that were recently completed. Let them know you are simply informing them. No action is required on their part.
Action Required—Focus your director’s attention on the items where you need action from them. These could be questions, conflicts, or places you need more guidance to unlock forward progress.
Priority Alignment—Finally, recommend the top priorities for the coming week. Ask your manager if there are any other new/urgent priorities you should be aware of. This way you are both on the same page, and you are aligned on where your time will be spent.

Use the above framework to take control of your brand’s agenda and demonstrate leadership in your 1:1s. And, if you’re a director already, you should discuss this kind of leadership with your reports.
