ROCKY'S ITALY: Orvieto - St. Patrick's Well (Il Pozzo di San Patrizio)

Описание к видео ROCKY'S ITALY: Orvieto - St. Patrick's Well (Il Pozzo di San Patrizio)

Commissioned in 1527 by Medici Pope Clement VII as a new source of drinking water for Orvieto, Italy, St. Patrick’s well is a unique combination of successful engineering and handsome architecture. The well was designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger (who also worked at St. Peter’s) with a double-helix staircase system that allowed water-carrying mules to ascend and descend without crossing paths. Measuring 53m (174ft.) in depth and 13m (43ft.) wide, the spectacular well consists of a central cylinder pierced by 72 windows that illuminate the 248 stairs of each staircase.
