STORYLINE:
The 47th edition of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade took place on Saturday evening, marking the end of two weeks of festivities.

Organisers say more than 180 floats and over 12,000 marchers participated this year.

About 300,000 people were expected to watch alongside the Parade route which started at 7pm with the Dykes on Bikes opening the event after a traditional smoking ceremony.

American tourist Kevin was here with his husband to celebrate "myself and my husband and my friends."

78ers member Meredith, who participated in the first ever Mardi Gras in 1978, said it was still relevant to march explaining that "it's so important that we keep standing up for our rights because as we can see in America they can so easily be taken away. So, we've got to get out there and still fight for all the generations that are coming after us 78ers."

Melinda Wilson, the mother of a 14 year old son who was marching in the parade this year, said that she was "here because my son is marching in the parade with the 2010 Youth group. So, I'm so proud of him. I'm such a proud mother. I'm just here to support and I just love that it's such a beautiful supportive environment and everyone so lovely and it's just beautiful."
