Dr. Leanne Williams, the Vincent V.C. Woo Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University and Director of the Stanford Center for Precision Mental Health and Wellness, presented, “Precision Treatments for Depression: Are We Getting Closer?”. Her talk was part of the Alan Hu Foundation Mental Health Lecture Series and was offered free to the public through a generous grant from Three Valleys Community Foundation.

Dr. Williams explained, “Major depressive disorder remains a public health crisis. The burden of depression has the greatest impact on young people in their most productive years, and all too often the consequences are fatal.” Using neuroimaging and clinical measures, she has identified biotypes of depression and anxiety. She discussed results from trials to understand which types of depression respond to different interventions and why, as well as opportunities to translate these results into clinical care. Dr. Williams wrote the first book on Precision Psychiatry, published by APA, and has contributed more than 380 scientific papers to the field.

The free webinar was held on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, from 6:30 - 7:30 pm PT via Zoom. It included 20 minutes for questions and answers following Dr. Williams’s presentation. The Mental Health Association for Chinese Communities at https://www.mhacc-usa.org provided simultaneous Chinese interpretation.

The Alan Hu Foundation was created by Xiaofang Chen and Chih-Ching Hu in memory of their son, Alan. He passed away due to mental disorders in 2018 at the age of 15. Their mission is to promote mental health, raise awareness and remove stigma surrounding psychiatric disorders, and to support fundamental research for cures.
