The Mysterious Aten: The Brief Reign of the Sun Disk explores the intriguing rise and fall of the Aten cult during a unique period in ancient Egyptian history. The Aten, the sun disk, became the center of a monotheistic belief system introduced by Pharaoh Akhenaten (Amenhotep IV). In a departure from Egypt’s traditional polytheistic religion, Akhenaten exalted the Aten as the sole god and forbade the worship of other gods.

This radical religious reform was accompanied by the transfer of the Egyptian capital to Akhetaten (modern-day Amarna), where Akhenaten founded a new city dedicated to the worship of the Aten. Represented as a sun disk with rays ending in the hands, the Aten was seen as the life-giving force. Akhenaten’s changes also inspired a distinctive artistic style characterized by naturalistic depictions and an emphasis on royalty.
