Welcome to Lecture No-16 of our comprehensive preparation series for the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) Plant Protection Inspector (PPI) and Plant Protection Supervisor (PPS) exams.
In this lecture, we discuss a sporadic yet significant sucking pest of paddy, especially prevalent during dry spells: the Rice Mealybug.
The Rice Mealybug (Brevennia rehi, formerly Ripersia oryzae) is easily identified by the white, waxy, cottony masses it forms between the leaf sheath and the stem. These pests suck the cell sap, leading to stunted growth and a characteristic symptom known as "Chakhal" or "Soorai" disease in some regions. Understanding its association with drought conditions and ants is crucial for your entomology exam.
Key Topics Covered in This Lecture:
✅ Scientific Name & Classification: Brevennia rehi (formerly Ripersia oryzae); (Family: Pseudococcidae, Order: Hemiptera).
✅ Identification: Nymphs and adult females are reddish-white, soft-bodied, and covered with white waxy or mealy powder. They are found in colonies hidden inside the leaf sheaths.
✅ Habit & Habitat: Infestation is severe under drought conditions or prolonged dry spells. They are often attended by ants which feed on the honeydew secreted by the bugs.
✅ Nature of Damage: Both nymphs and adults suck sap from the stem. Symptoms: Plants become weak, stunted, and turn yellowish. Panicle emergence is inhibited in severe cases. Presence of white mealy masses and ants on the plant.
✅ Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Cultural Control: Prompt removal and destruction of infested plants. Flooding the field for a few days can help reduce the population. Biological Control: Conservation of natural enemies like Coccinellid beetles (ladybird beetles). Chemical Control: Application of recommended systemic insecticides (like Dimethoate or Imidacloprid) sprayed towards the base of the plants when infestation is noticed.
This lecture provides the precise facts needed for your BPSC exam preparation. Make sure to take notes on its identification features and favorable conditions!
