Aelbert was the only son of the painter Jacob Cuyp and became the most prominent representative of the Cuyp family of painters in Dordrecht, to which Jacob's half-brother, Benjamin Cuyp, also belonged. Aelbert was certainly instructed by his father, but there is no record of him receiving training from an external teacher or entering a local painters' guild. Initially, Aelbert collaborated on his father's paintings, mainly contributing landscape backgrounds to some family portraits. Around 1642, he embarked on his first significant journey through Holland and along the Rhine. His second trip in 1652 took him again along the Rhine and Waal to Rhenen and Nijmegen, then further to Kleve, Elten, and Emmerich. On both journeys, he made numerous drawings that later formed the basis of many of his landscape paintings. The Albert Cuyp Street and the Albert Cuyp Market in Amsterdam are named after him.
Aelbert's early landscapes clearly bear the influence of Jan van Goyen, Salomon van Ruysdael, and Herman Saftleven II, although he rendered light slightly brighter and more contrasting and emphasized figures like cattle, shepherds, and fishermen. He likely had personal contact with van Goyen during the latter's repeated visits to Dordrecht.
Among Cuyp's most celebrated paintings is "The Maas at Dordrecht," a masterpiece that epitomizes the artist's ability to capture the serene beauty of the Dutch landscape. Set against the tranquil waters of the Maas River, the painting bathes the scene in a soft, golden light, suffusing the landscape with a sense of warmth and tranquility. The gently rolling hills, dotted with grazing cattle and quaint farmhouses, evoke a sense of pastoral idyll, inviting viewers to lose themselves in the peaceful rhythms of rural life.
Another iconic work by Cuyp is "Herdsmen with Cows by a River," a luminous depiction of pastoral tranquility that showcases the artist's mastery of light and color. Against a backdrop of verdant meadows and meandering rivers, the figures of herdsmen tending to their cattle exude a sense of quiet contentment, their silhouettes ...
