Working in this space, I've heard a LOT of myths about travel, but here are my top 3:

"Authentic just means cheap" — authentic tourism is often mistaken for budget travel, but for the wrong reasons. Authentic experiences do tend to cost a bit less because they are not packaged for general tourism (and many of us know touristy activities are way overpriced).

"All the best recs are on social" — Sorry YouTube, but no. Some of the best recommendations I've gotten have been from the most unlikely of places: a random dude on the street, a cab driver, and the list goes on. As a general rule, if it's on social, it's probably overhyped.

"I can't communicate with anyone here." — Yes, a language barrier is tough to navigate, but don't let that be the reason you spend a full vacation at the hotel bar. I love these apps for translation on the go: Papago and Google Translate.
