CULLOMPTON’S war memorial will be awash with poppies next month as the town marks Armistice Day.
For the second year running residents are being invited to participate in Cullompton Poppy Project, a partnership between Cullompton Arts House, Fudge’s Wool and Haberdashery Shop, the Royal British Legion, and the Town Council. In addition the children of St Andrew’s Primary School will be participating by making their own poppies to add to the display.
Cara Brameld, co-owner of Fudge’s Wool and Haberdashery Shop said: “The idea is simple: knit, crochet, craft or buy a poppy, then either wear it for remembrance or donate it to our public Armistice Display.
“Last year we had over 300 poppies on display and raised £275 for the Royal British Legion. This year we hope to double the number of poppies as well as raising funds for the same excellent cause.”
Janet Sutton Webb of Cullompton Arts House who are funding the project added: “We are very thankful for the commitment of those who made the poppies last year and are doing so again this year.
“Our intention is for people to make or buy something beautiful and at the same time remember those who gave, and still give, their lives in service so that we might live in peace."
Patterns and all the materials needed to make the poppies are available from Fudge’s Wool and Haberdashery Shop at 30, Fore Street, Cullompton.
People wishing to make a poppy can drop in and do so with the help and advice of staff. There will also be handmade poppies on sale for those who would rather buy theirs.
