Welcome to this month’s roundtable on sustainable food systems. Our current food systems are shaped by complex social, environmental, and economic factors, posing significant challenges. Food and agriculture contribute to up to one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, and 70% of freshwater withdrawals, and drive deforestation and biodiversity loss. Alarmingly, around 931 million tonnes of food are wasted annually, while 45 million people in 43 countries face food insecurity due to conflicts, climate shocks, and inefficient supply chains.



To address these urgent issues, we must transform our food systems to ensure access to affordable, nutritious, and healthy food for all by 2030, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement. This month, we will delve into innovative approaches to enhance how we grow our food, benefiting both our health and the health of our planet.
