Subaru New 2025 Hybrid System Has Impressive Range

Subaru has revealed more information about their upcoming electrified boxer powertrain, which will debut in the Crosstrek hybrid this December. At the heart of this system is a specially designed 2.5-liter, horizontally opposed engine. It generates 158 horsepower at 5,600 revolutions per minute and produces 154 pound-feet of torque between 4,000 and 4,400 revolutions per minute. Subaru has moved the power control unit above the engine, allowing for a larger fuel tank with a capacity of 16.6 gallons. This gives the Crosstrek an impressive estimated range of over 621 miles on a single tank, which Subaru notes is based on the generous Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Cycles.

The hybrid system includes two electric motors, with one driving the wheels and the other functioning as a generator. The traction motor delivers 118 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque, enabling the electric motor to handle a variety of driving situations. The Crosstrek features a 1.1-kilowatt-hour battery pack, allowing limited electric-only driving. The symmetrical all-wheel-drive system mechanically connects the front and rear wheels, and Subaru has added a 1,500-watt outlet in the cargo area for powering appliances and camping equipment.

The Japan-specific Crosstrek hybrid will be available in December 2024, with a global release expected soon after.
