20 Year Old Nike Dunk Bucks Full Restoration

It seems like every other week Vick’s working on a different pair of Nike Dunks. But unlike all of the hypebeasts out there who only rock Panda Dunks, Vick tends to gravitate towards the older Nike SB Dunks…like the Buck Nike SB Dunk that he’s working on today.

The Nike SB Dunk Buck dropped in 2003, making this shoe almost 20 years old. These Dunks are in need of a lifeline, so Vick is going to give them a complete transformation. This sneaker restoration will include a full regule, deep cleaning, paint job, and more.

There’s something so satisfying about deconstructing a shoe. The glue on this Nike Dunk is so old that it’s lost all of its grip - the only thing holding the shoe together at this point is the stitching. All Vick had to do to take the Dunks apart was cut the stitching loose from the midsole.

Now that the Nike SB Dunk Bucks is taken apart, it’ll be much easier to clean. Vick hit the sole of the shoe with RESHOEVN8R Sneaker Cleaning Solution and the Brass Bristle Brush to remove the dirt. To remove the yellowing and oxidation, Vick applied RESHOEVN8R Sole Revive and left the sole to catch some UV rays in the Vick 2000. After using an air compressor and a vacuum to clean out the gross pet hair from the Dunks, it’s time to hammer the uppers with RESHOEVN8R Sneaker Cleaning Solution and the Soft Bristle Brush.

Now that the preliminary cleaning is done and the sole is back from its beach vacation in the Vick 2000, we’re ready to prep each piece and glue the Dunks back together.

Vick removed the old glue with acetone and cotton balls, and carefully applied new glue to each piece, before letting it cure for a few hours. Then he heated each section up piece by piece and bonded the shoe back together, paying special attention to alignment of the edges.

The most painstaking (and probably most important) part of this Nike Dunk restoration is the stitching around the midsole. Vick used some new white thread and a sewing awl to secure the midsole into place, stitch by stitch.

And just like that, the shoe is wearable again…although it still needs some major cosmetic work. A few portions of the shoe are going to need some fresh paint.

Vick prepped the white leather with an alcohol wipe and then laid down a fresh coat of paint. He then sanded down the yellow leather panel to remove some paint cracking, and repainted it.

The only thing missing from this restoration is a little TLC on the green suede. For this, Vick brushed the shoe all over with a Medium Bristle Brush to reset the nap, and then hit it with a coat of Mink Oil to bring back the rich green hue.

Didn’t these turn out awesome?

The Buck Nike SB Dunk sure doesn’t look like it’s 20 years old anymore.
Admittedly Vick loves working on old Nike SB Dunks because the raw materials are so nice…he’s not wrong. Despite the age of the shoe, it held up surprisingly well, and cleaned up without much trouble at all thanks to Vick’s trusty RESHOEVN8R sneaker care products.

Right now brand new pairs of the Nike SB Dunk 'Buck' are trending for around $1500….wonder what Vick could get for these?
