Caught in a rhythmic dance, Miranda Chan and Frédérique Rodier capture women evolving from rage to liberation, collectively untamed.

Inspired by Clarissa Pinkola Estés’ exploration of the female psyche, Women Who Run with the Wolves, Miranda Chan and Frédérique Rodier choreograph a statement on the instinctual nature of women for dance film Fureur Collective. Translated as collective rage, the piece captures a group of powerful women evolving from rage to liberation, entranced in a repetitive and rhythmic ritualistic dance.

Based in Paris, Chan – who also performs with Léo Walk’s company La Marche Bleue – directs Fureur Collective as an extension of ongoing project Political Bodies, exploring ways of encouraging a more collectively liberated future through movement. Prioritizing bodies marginalized by the dominant society, the choreography deconstructs conventions around women’s portrayal in dance; traversing different physicalities, one movement transforms into another, illustrating the many facets through which women embody their womanhood.

“This is an ode to the Wild Women, who represent the wildish nature women are born with that becomes tamed through social conditioning. Here is to waking up that innate power women have to be both daring and caring. When this consciousness occurs, a collective rage is born.”
Inspired by the phases of the moon, plays of light developed with cinematographer Juliette Lossky emphasize the steadily-evolving sense of movement: from dynamic to fluid, controlled to full release. Building to a raw, untempered energy, transferred between its dancers, Fureur Collective seeks to embolden women to re-embrace their wildness through collectivity, defying the parameters they are forced to contain themselves within through social conditioning.
