At the Longevity Forum Science Summit, Professor Ian Mudway (Imperial College London) delivered a compelling exploration of how air pollution accelerates biological aging. Highlighting the staggering 8 million premature deaths annually linked to long-term indoor and outdoor pollution exposure, Mudway shows how pollutants don’t just trigger acute health events—they actively shape the trajectory of ageing and susceptibility to chronic, age-related disease. Drawing on new findings from the UKRI-funded DREAM project and the Airwave cohort, he demonstrates how different epigenetic clocks reveal accelerated ageing in response to smoking, diet, and—crucially—ambient air pollution, with PM2.5 and PM10 showing strong effects on mitotic and cellular ageing pathways. Mudway also shares the first evidence that Mediterranean diet patterns may offer a degree of protection against pollution-driven biological ageing.
