大巴窑可箅是新加坡建屋发展局设计和发展的政府组屋区，是组屋区的始祖，也是日后组屋区的设计与构造原型。尽管大巴窑的面貌己随着时代的变迁而改变，那里仍有着许许多多为人津津乐道的故事。例如大牌177号前的神树、早期多国名人到访时都会登上大牌53号这“贵宾楼”鸟瞰大巴窑的市容、建屋局城市规划时提出五合庙（即福德正神“大伯公”（聚天宫）、土地公和土地婆（山竹园福德祠）、感天大帝（通兴港）、一百零八好汉（昭应祠）、宋大峰祖师（华德善堂））即后来的联合宫的概念。从早期的定居者、种植园园主、19世纪努力清理大片沼泽地的工人、到后来的甘榜村民和第一代组屋居民，大巴窑始终诉说着先驱们刻苦耐劳的生活故事。

Toa Payoh might not be Singapore’s swankiest district, but there’s so much more to this sleepy neighbourhood than meets the eye. In Hokkien, the literal translation of the word “Toa Payoh”, is “big swamp” – which is exactly what it was back in the day, before high-rise residential buildings and shopping malls peppered its skyline.
Toa Payoh is the first town comprehensively planned and developed by HDB. Developed based on the Neighbourhood Principle, several neighbourhoods are grouped around a Town Centre. The town centre acts as a focal point for the entertainment and shopping needs of residents.
Toa Payoh has played host to many significant events, such as the visits by Queen Elizabeth II in 1972, and again in 2006. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao also visited the town in 2007. It also hosted the South East Asian Peninsular (SEAP) Games in 1973.
As one of Singapore’s oldest housing estates, Toa Payoh was the first to benefit from the Estate Renewal Strategy – an integrated and systematic approach to rejuvenate older HDB towns, making them more comparable with newer estates. The estate renewal efforts revitalised Toa Payoh, and the pioneer HDB town is a vibrant place today, and home to the HDB Hub, HDB’s headquarters.
Toa Payoh as the first town designed and developed entirely by the Housing & Development Board (HDB), Toa Payoh is the archetypical granddaddy of all public housing towns in Singapore. Providing a proving ground for the budding culture and social architecture of public housing from the 1960s, as well as the community institutions that have since become ubiquitous, Toa Payoh may well be the quintessential modern Singapore town.
Fittingly, the list of Singapore ‘firsts’ pioneered in Toa Payoh is a long one: first Residents’ Association (a ground-up effort that preceded the Residents’ Committees of today), first town to employ the neighbourhood police post system, first cooperative supermarket in Singapore (NTUC Welcome, the forerunner of today’s NTUC Fairprice), first Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station to be built and first
mosque to be constructed under the Mosque Building Fund (MBF), among other firsts.
Beneath the veneers of recent history and the lists of institutional milestones however, the stories of life in Toa Payoh run deep. Fromtheearliestsettlers,plantationowners and workers in the 19th century struggling to clear vast swathes of swampland, to the kampong residents who followed in their wake and later the first generation of flat dwellers, the theme has been one of pioneer lives and hardworking occupations.
