Out of all of my guitars, my Gibson Les Paul Custom is the one I've found the hardest to bond with over the years. We've been together for 22 years, and still the relationship is a love/hate one....occasionally its sound has been exactly what I've needed - but regardless of what pickups I've equipped it with, it's never been any form of go-to.

But I have a big recording project coming up, and as part of that, I'm needing to produce some heavier, 70's hard rock and 80's hair metal tones. And all of my other guitars are set up with a vintage voice rooted in the late 1950s. So I decided to search out a new set of humbuckers for my old Custom to see if it could become my heavy rock juggernaut.

I really lucked out in finding the Bare Knuckle Rebel Yell humbuckers - the signature model of Billy Idol axe slinger Steve Stevens. If anybody knows hard rock tone it's that fella - so when a set of Zebra-fronted Yells showed up on eBay, I pounced on them. And boy, am I glad I did!

They have a lovely tightness in the low end, but still a good amount of snarl and bite to them...exactly what is typically lacking from a hot humbucker. These give me all the clarity that I desire, whilst pushing things hard enough to really hammer out the riffs.

Today, I'll be showing them off through a few all-tube amplifiers (I'm not really set up for heavy gain, but I have two heads with front end gain at least, so I'll use them along with my old trusty JTM45). But I'm also going to stretch the legs of my 2025 recording pedalboard - as these are the sort of tones synonymous with being fairly drenched in FX.....so why the 'yell' not?!?
