Linda Hendrickson demonstrates both rightward and leftward splittings, and shows the benefits of using a double-pointed gripfid.

In ply-split braiding, a gripfid splits one or more cords, and then pulls another cord through. Most often, cords are pulled through to the right (a rightward splitting). In some designs, cords need to be pulled to the left (leftward splitting), either to maintain structure or design. When this occurs, right-handed workers typically avoid leftward splittings by turning the braid over and make rightward splittings.

The first demonstration in this video shows a design where both rightward and leftward splittings occur in every row. By using a double-pointed gripfid, it’s easy to work across the row without turning the braid over.

The second demonstration shows a ply-split band, with cords made according to a tablet weaving threading diagram. Crosswise cords go back and forth across the band. This band is structurally identical to warp twining, with a distinctly different front and back side to the chevron design (smooth diagonals on the front and jagged on the back). A double-pointed gripfid makes it easy to work on the front side all the time, always splitting with the right hand.
