STORYLINE

A few hundred members of Belgium''''s Kurdish community on Wednesday protested in Brussels against the Syrian government''''s treatment of Kurds.

The demonstrators assembled in the heart of the European district to condemn what they called Syria''''s suppression of Kurds.

The protest came as clashes continued between security forces and Kurds in northern Syria, with violence spreading to Aleppo, the nation''''s second-largest city.

A Kurdish politicians and a witness said at least five Kurds and three policemen were killed in the latest unrest.

There was no immediate confirmation of the violence from the Syrian government, which has not issued any casualty figures.

But the latest fatalities bring to at least 24 the number of deaths - 17 Kurds, four Arabs and three officers - in fighting between Kurds and the police and members of Syria''''s Arab majority since Friday, according to Kurdish groups and hospitals in Syria''''s northeast.

More than 100 were wounded.

The unrest, which erupted on Friday over a football match, has raised concern that the Kurds, whom the Syrian constitution does not recognise, have been inspired by the political rise of the Kurds in neighbouring Iraq since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein last year.

Kurds make up about one and a half (m) million of Syria''''s 18 and a half (m) million people and live mostly in the underdeveloped provinces of Qamishli and Hasakah.
