The Real Movie Star Locomotive | The Tale of Sierra Number 3 | History in the Dark

There are a few locomotives that have appeared in various films over the years. However, not a single one has appeared in nearly as many as Sierra Number 3. A 4-6-0 ten-wheeler first built in the late 1800's, her appearance as a wild west style steam locomotive and her location right near Hollywood made her a shoe-in for roles in various westerns from 1920 all the way until the 1990's. Today, she still runs excursion services after a nearly decade-long rebuild brought her up to steam once more.

"No. 3 is a 4-6-0 ten-wheeler built by the Rogers Locomotive and Machine Works of Paterson, New Jersey. Construction of the locomotive was completed on March 26, 1891, and was given Rogers construction number 4493. It has 17 in × 24 in (43 cm × 61 cm) cylinders, 56-inch (140 cm) driving wheels and weighs 50 short tons (45 t) in working order. It was built for the Prescott & Arizona Central Railway (P&AC) as their locomotive 3 and named W.N. Kelley after the company's treasurer."
