Along Africa's Red Sea Coast, bordering Sudan, Ethiopia and Djibouti, is Eritrea. Over the years, the country has earned a controversial nickname. It is called Africa's North Korea. Like North Korea, Eritrea does not have nuclear weapons but there are multiple similarities between the two countries and its leaders. Eritrea and North Korea are both one-party states whose rulers have no appetite for criticism. President Isaias Afwerki has been the country's leader for over three decades since its independence. Like North Korea, Eritrea also became a military state with a compulsory system of indefinite conscription.
