C & O Steam Locomotive 1309 tribute - "High Iron in the Hills" - Not just another train song, but a tribute "to the largest operating steam locomotive of its type in the world." 1309 was the last mainline steamer built in America by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1949, and is currently owned and operated by the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. It has been almost a year since 1309 moved under its own power for the first time in over 64 years. A monumental accomplishment of this magnitude deserves to be recognized, and we can think of no better way to tell the story of 1309 than with a song.
High Iron in the Hills (Tribute to C & O Locomotive 1309) - by Mike Stand
On the C & O Railroad, 1949
Hear the whistle blast from 1309
Built in the Baldwin fac’try, Philadelphia PA
T'was the end of an Era, and the last steamer made
Oh there’s high Iron in the hills there’s high Iron in the hills
In the mountains of Kentucky, and West Virginia you’ll find
A Mallet in the valley and its 1309
A Mallet in the valley and its 1309
It’s a cold afternoon, but the steam is runn’in HOT
1309 's given it all its got
From the yard at Peach Creek, to the Logan county line
Up the winding grade, to the Lundale Coal mine
Late in 1956, the time had come, 1309 made its final run
Pushed aside, not forgotten, til one December day
They fired up the boiler n’ brought ‘er back to steam

The Altar Billies are a trio from Orange County California fronted by guitarist/vocalist Michael W Stand. Rounding out the group are Johnny X on upright and Chuck Cummings on Drums. The group covers many classics hits, as well as newly penned originals.
The fellas have been playing all over Southern California for coming up to 10 years now. They've enjoyed such venues as the Anaheim House of Blues, The Observatory in Costa Mesa, Orange Street Fair, Silverado Canyon concert series, as well as many clubs in the OC area. They have also opened several times for local OC icon Big Sandy, as well as for Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats..
As of late, group has found itself producing songs and videos about restored locomotive steam engines and railroad lines. The restoration of Big Boy 4014 and Union Pacific Railroad has been a huge topic of the Altar Billies, but they have extended their musical and lyrical "Branch lines" to include songs about "The Virginia and Truckee railroad" and the restoration of C & O locomotive 1309.
In 2014 they released their first full length project: "Head'n Out West" Each song on this project is a testament to the band's firm believe in God, family and country. There is more to this group than meets the eye, as this 15 song musical adventure sought to establish the group as a viable and serious rockabilly/ Americana act. "Head'n out West" brings plenty to the table and more, in a "Spirit of lightening" that will surely keep you rock'n, and and move'n.
2016 found the fellas hitting the trail once again with their latest release: “Long, Long Road.” With this project the group has fine-tuned their sound so that it is “as sharp as a tack.” “Long, Long Road” finds Michael W expanding his songwriting skills to incorporate aspects of swing jazz with songs such as “Hot,” “Tumbleweed,” and “Hot (Big Band Version).”
The Altar Billies are proud to carry the rockabilly torch and keep this musical heritage alive, and relevant. They are 3 swell guys that work hard, play together really well and have a good time in the process, and "yes" they like trains."
