Judas Priest was formed in 1969 in Birmingham, England, by guitarist K.K. Downing and bassist Ian Hill. The band’s name was inspired by Bob Dylan’s song "The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest," and it perfectly captured the dark, rebellious spirit of their music. The early lineup included Al Atkins on vocals and John Ellis on drums, but it wasn’t until the arrival of Rob Halford and Glenn Tipton in the early 1970s that Judas Priest began to find their signature sound.
