Haemorrhoids are basically the dilated swollen veins over the rectum and the anal canal. These haemorrhoids are very painful during pregnancy and it causes irritation and itching in the anal region and sometimes it can cause bleeding through the anal canal. So all of these symptoms can cause lot of discomfort to the pregnant lady. The cause of the haemorrhoids during pregnancy is het growing uterus, basically outing pressure over your pelvic veins, rectal and the anal veins. So it causes dilatation of these veins. The size of these haemorrhoids can vary form pea size to a size of the grapes and it can be very swollen and painful, it causes difficulty in sitting also the growing uterus is outing pressure over these veins so these veins are becoming swollen or dilated, as well as the chronic constipation, decreased intake of fluid and the decreased intake of the roughage in the diet can also predispose a women towards haemorrhoids especially it is evident during the late 2nd and the third trimester of pregnancy. The increased levels of the progesterone hormones are also an important cause for haemorrhoids in pregnancy. So basically treatment is the supportive treatment, management of the symptoms like we advise the women to have lots of fluids like 3 litres of water and increase the roughage and fruits and vegetables in the diet and with that the bowel movements are controlled and it is regulated and constipation is decreased and we advise them to go for regular walking and physical exercise which also includes proper peristaltic movements. Further with these measures if it is not getting controlled, we add some artificial laxatives, which are the natural fibres which helps you to control your constipation and it helps in relieving the symptoms. Taking care of the dilated and the swollen pelvic veins we use some ointment which causes reducing the swelling and the edema over the haemorrhoids as well as because of its local anaesthetic actions, it causes relief of the symptoms from the pain. Sometimes we use other laxatives like enema, suppositories if required. Very rarely daflon which is a medical management of haemorrhoids is used.
