Rare money - it's a term we are all curious about - namely because we want to know if we have any lying around.

And with so many worth hundreds - take the 2009 Kew Gardens 50p for example - having a dig around your change could prove well worth the effort.

The coins worth the most are often those with low mintage numbers or printing errors that date back to when they were first manufactured.

"Mistakes are eminently collectable," explains Philip Mussell, director of Coin News.

One coin, dated from the initial release date in 1971, is currently on the site for £14,000, and is described as “extremely rare”.

There are five similar coins up for sale on the site, including on with a buy it now price of £4,958.47

The coin, also printed in 1971, has 11 watchers and is located in the UK, as are all the others.

One coin, featuring a slightly turned up edge, is dated 1979 and is on at £1500, while the cheapest offering is a 1980 coin for £680.

The British decimal two pence (2p) coin – often informally pronounced too pee – is a unit of currency equalling 2/100ths of a pound sterling. Its obverse has featured the profile of Queen Elizabeth II since the coin's introduction on 15 February 1971, the year British currency was decimalised. Four different portraits of the Queen have been used on the coin, with the latest design by Jody Clark being introduced in 2015. The second and current reverse, featuring a segment of the Royal Shield, was introduced in 2008.
