If you’re an immigrant parent in Texas right now — especially without legal status — the fear is real. I’m hearing it everywhere: Is it safe to send my kids to school? What should I be doing to protect my family?

Here’s my advice, and it’s the same guidance I give every single day in our Know Your Rights clinics:

Your kids need to be in school.
Just like you would go to the hospital in a medical emergency, children — especially in elementary school — need to be in their classrooms. That is non-negotiable for their safety, their stability, and their future.

But you also need to plan ahead.

Right now, every immigrant family — no matter your status — should have a safety plan in place. That means:
• Consult with an immigration lawyer.
• Keep your important documents organized and accessible.
• Make a plan for what happens if a parent is detained.
• Know who can care for your children in an emergency.

Because the truth is painful: parents are being picked up, and children are ending up in foster care. It’s horrific, and it’s happening. Preparing now is the best way to protect your family if the worst happens.

You deserve safety. You deserve stability. And you deserve a state that doesn’t terrorize the very families who make our communities strong. Until we get there, planning ahead is essential.
