Cllr John Halsall, the leader of Wokingham Borough Council, has written to housing minister Michael Gove urging reform of the national planning system.

He says it fails to recognise when authorities like WBC take a higher number of homes than they need straight away, which in theory should allow them to take a lower number in the years ahead.

But instead the figure is calculated according to a simple formula that doesn't recognise recent completions, meaning these areas must take more homes than they truly need.

The letter comes as the council nears the end of a public consultation on part of its Local Plan Update, which allocates land for more than 750 new homes a year until 2038 to meet the Government's requirements.

Cllr Halsall says he accepts some new homes are needed to allow growth and provide housing for future generations but believe this number is too high.
