Adding and Subtracting Decimals

To add two decimal numbers, first check if they have the same number of digits to the right of the decimal point. If they don't, add zeros to the right of one of the numbers until they do.

Then, write one number on top of the other, lining up the decimal points vertically. Add as you would with whole numbers, and bring the decimal point straight down.

Example 1:

Add 13.49213.492 and 7.87.8 .

Example 2:

Subtract 7.87.8 from 13.49213.492 .




To add decimals, follow these steps:

Write down the numbers, one under the other, with the decimal points lined up

Put in zeros so the numbers have the same length

Then add, using column addition, remembering to put the decimal point in the answer
