Carbon Monoxide incidents need to have at least 2 factors present, the generation of Carbon Monoxide from incomplete combustion and the dissemination or spread of this poisonous gas outside of its design containment systems. In this two part series I covered some of the possible fuel air ratio incomplete combustion issues that could generate CO in episode 1.

In this episode, (episode 2), I focus more on obvious issues with flue gas venting or containment systems. These systems often get very little attention and are just thought to exist in a carefree way forever. What many people don't realize is that these systems are subject to constant corrosion from moist flue gases that condense and turn slightly acidic.

Many of these systems cycle on and off repeatedly subjecting joints and fasteners to thermal stresses. Over time these systems, especially older ones made from less robust materials, tend to fail and can literally fall apart.

The approach of winter provides a great time to engage a professional to review your systems and for you and your staff to have a regular protocol for things to look at in between the more intense professional investigations.
