Big Fish are Dying - Who's to Blame?

While it may look gruesome, Commercial Fishing is the first step in the supply chain that brings you your beautiful grocery store fish filets. For decades the Striped Bass has been considered incredible table fare, enjoyed by both recreational fishermen and every consumers alike. However the fishery has seen a fair share of ups and downs. In the late 1980s the Striped Bass was overfished to the point where it was rare to even catch just one. As a result the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, the main commission responsible for the Striped Bass regulations, implemented a moratorium on the fishery. As a result the Striped Bass populations recovered tremendously, resulting in a "golden age" of fishing after the moratorium was lifted 5 years later. Fast forward to 2023 - researchers and biologists are once again pointing out concerning data on Striped Bass populations. But is it really commercial fishing that is to blame?
