On April 9, 1825, General Lafayette crossed into Louisiana navigating aboard the steamboat "Natchez" from Mobile, AL. Instead of going with the lake route, he meandered his way up the Mississippi River to reach New Orleans.

Upon entering the delta system, he passed by Fort Balize. His progress upriver was acclaimed by a gun salute fired from Fort St. Philip.
